809 AREA CODE SCAM

Currently, there is an area code scam that has been reported. Here’s how the scam works: You receive a call from an 809 area code with a message that states that the person has something important to tell you. Then, the person calling leaves the number again, with an 809 area code encouraging you to call soon. They entice you to call back by telling you that they have information about a family member or to tell you that someone that you know has been arrested or is ill, or even to tell you that you have won a prize. Since there are so many new area codes, and because the messages are usually enticing, people are calling the 809 phone number back. If you call the number back, you will either get a long recorded message or a person that will intentionally keep you on the phone for a long period of time. if you call the number back from the United States you will be charged significant, out of country fees for the call.

Why this scam works:

The 809 area code is an actual area code located in the British Virgin Islands. If you make the call and try to fight the charges afterwards, this will become a real nightmare because you did actually make the call. If you complain, both your local phone company and you long distance carrier will not want to get involved and will most likely tell you that they are simply providing the billing for the foreign company. You will end up dealing with a foreign company that argues they have done nothing wrong.

DO NOT RETURN ANY CALL THAT BEGINS WITH AN AREA CODE OF 809, 284 OR 876!!
